First Of Three Excerpts In Italian from LA7 Program On Meredith’s Case

Posted by True North

Thanks to TJMK poster Cesare Beccaria for the video links. We posted some background last Friday.

The male reporter asks Prosecutor Mignini what was the most damning evidence in this case? Mignini replies: the knife, the bra clasp, and the mixed blood traces in the bathroom.

Mignini stands firm when answering Andrea Vogt’s repeated question of what about “the low copy numbers?” He asserts that it was indisputably Meredith’s DNA on the knife. There was never any transfer or contamination of DNA on the knife because Meredith never touched it nor had she ever been to Sollecito’s house.

While admitting that the bra clasp had not been retrieved until 46 days later, there was never any transfer or contamination of DNA on the clasp. He stresses that the bra clasp never left Meredith’s room and yet still had plenty of Sollecito’s DNA on it.

Added: As suggested in Comments below, there seems very good reason to translate all of Mr Mignini’s remarks, and we will be posting a full transcript of this video one day this week.

Reporting from this continent, Southern Colorado’s KKTV.com today posted these comments made by Edda Mellas:

Edda Mellas, who attended the preliminary hearing on Tuesday, said she was confused as to why she was being accused of slander.

“It’s unbelievable, I guess I just don’t understand” she said.

“All I did was answer a reporter’s question”, she added. “I said what Amanda told me, the same thing I’ve said many times, the same thing that Amanda said. So it’s very strange”.

Haven’t we heard these exact words before from Amanda during her entire murder trial? Can’t imagine why Mellas doesn’t understand the predicament she now faces, given that she had her defense lawyer present at the hearing.

dear edda,

please get your PR rep to explain slander to you and your team. what’s unbelievable is how this family continues to think that if one says something often enough and loud enough it becomes a fact.

sometimes the law is an ass and sometimes it’s the client!

Edda is playing dumb so as to avoid consequences, just as AK does.  We can see where Foxy Knoxy gets it from.

I can understand that Edda wants to believe her daughter, so she believes that AK was abused, but she would not be in this hot water if she stated, “Amanda said she was abused” instead of “Amanda was abused”. Big difference, as one is the truth and the other is not.

Apologies for a delay in the posting - though it is always intriguing to us to read your comments. (Often pretty amusing too.)

Unfortunately this video and the other two that True North and Cesare want to post starts when the page is opened. (You can stop it of course by clicking the square button at bottom left.)

We find this is a problem with quite a few embedded news videos. There is a way around it we have used a lot - download the video file, and then upload it again as one of our YouTubes.

That seems to be my job, and I dont have the software here on the road. Right now I’m on the south Maine coast and will be back in NYC tonight.

So if the download works we should get the three YouTubes up by tomorrow. Okay commenters. Please carry on!

I originally had some sympathy for Curt Knox and Edda Mellas. Their daughter, arrested in a foreign country, charged with an appalling crime. A total nightmare, for anyone.

But then I started to research and understand that they MUST know their daughter is guilty. Either they are stupid (and they most definitely are NOT), or they are being deceptive.

I hope that if (heaven forfend) I ever have kids and one of them is in a similar situation, I have the guts and the courage to say to them “I love you and I will always love you and I will always be here for you, but it’s very clear to me that you were involved in this, so give me some truth, do your time, and I will be waiting for you when you get our, and I will be here for you forever”.

It is that courage which Curt and Edda conspicuously lack.

On a side note, I am teaching summer school right now - teenagers from all over Europe. A lot of Italians, and a couple of very sweet and polite kids from Perugia. I think it’s terribly sad that so many people know their wonderful city through such a horrific event.

Their English is pretty good, but I haven’t broached the case with them, apart from to say, when they mentioned being from Perugia, “ah, a city that has been in the news a lot lately”. A subtle but clear eye-roll was sufficient for me to decide I wouldn’t go near that particular issue with them, ever again!

Curt and Edda are sending a clear message to Amanda: being our daughter, it is simply impossible you could ever do such a thing. We do not even want to think about it. We did all we could and even more, don’t you remember? We are good parents, we neved did a single mistake.

Therefore, daughter, this CANNOT

Curt Knox specifically stated in a BBC interview that Amanda Knox’s “human rights” were violated by the Italian law enforcement (at about 3:30 minutes into the interview):

Hi Giustizia,

Curt Knox and Edda Mellas have repeatedly misled journalists covering the case. Curt Knox made a number of false claims in this BBC interview.

Amanda Knox wasn’t questioned for 14 hours on 5 November 2007.

The Italian Supreme Court never ruled that Amanda Knox’s human rights were violated.

The police weren’t required to record Knox’s interrogation on 5 November 2007 because she was being questioned as a witness and not as a suspect.

Curt Knox wasn’t present when Amanda Knox was questioned, so he doesn’t know that she was asked to visualise what could have happened. According to the witnesses who were actually present, including Amanda Knox’s interpreter, she voluntarily accused Diya Lumumba of murdering Meredith. She repeated this false and malicious allegation on at least three separate occasions.

In other media interviews, Curt Knox and Edda Mellas have presented Amanda Knox’s claim that she was hit by a police officer as an indisputable fact. Apart from the fact that they weren’t actually present when Amanda Knox was questioned, they are relying on the word of a compulsive liar who has lied deliberately and repeatedly.

Upon first glance, the interviews given by Curt Knox and Eddas Mellas appear to be just spontaneous replies to questions asked from the interviewers.

However, on closer examination all of the interviews that Curt and Edda have ever made during the past three years are, in actual fact, carefully scripted one act media plays that are being directed by their hired PR production company.

If one were to compare early media interview’s made in 2007 by Curt and Eddas, to more recent media interviews made in 2010 (and as recent as yesterday) their PR produced scripted lines are identically the same.

Since this old PR production play continues to be aired, just like a bad rerun, it wouldn’t surprise to see the FOA audience scramble out of their seats and demand a refund.

Hi Machine: I think Knox/Mellas should ask for a refund from David Marriot PR spin machine if they are the ones who gave the advice to accuse the Italian law enforcement of “human rights violations.”

Did they really think that Italy, an ally of the US, violates human rights like a third world war zone country? Did they really think that the public would buy it? Not to mention that the US Embassy monitored the trial and found nothing amiss, or evidence of human rights violations.

The Curt Knox interview mentioned above was taped after the trial and verdict were rendered, so he had plenty of time to ascertain the accurate facts. He made a mistake by trying his slanderous accusations on public television. Why didn’t the defense attorneys file a claim in court?

It is interesting to note Curt Knox’s stance that his daughter is completely innocent, despite the fact that she and Sollecito do not have a linear alibi and can not remember if they were with each other for the entire evening of the murder.

Mignini’s my man! I sure do like his style. He’s serious, affable, courageous. Go Mignini!

OT: I’ve finished “Sea of Truth”, a book found in Meredith’s room after her death. It’s about 2 brothers from Rome whose father is a world renowned immunologist.

He is given a document by an African cardinal dying of AIDS, a highly inflammatory paper denouncing Catholic teachings.

When the immunologist dies, his two sons begin to quarrel. One is a rising Italian politician, the other an unmarried free spirit who links up with a woman in an ecoterrorist movement called “Stopwatch”.

A clock flashes a new number every time a human is born. This group is fighting overpopulation, deforestation, etc. Of course the politician brother is terrified his chances at the polls will vanish if he’s affiliated with radicals.

Lorenzo loves the sea. He grabs his brother’s boat and sails with the girl to Corsica as they run from police. He follows a cryptic clue written on the back of his father’s photograph. He ends up in Faro, Portugal finding the last copy of the document that hasn’t been stolen.

Lorenzo is aghast at his brother Fabio’s hectic life of cell phone addiction, hyper info-gathering via TV, PC, 3 cell phones (one for his lovers) and the endless tension in his 15-year marriage.

Fabio says his wife is “a neurotic, implacable hyena, a control freak.” Her version of the marriage is that Fabio is having affairs with every woman in politics and spends no time with her or their only son, who is addicting himself to video games and becoming disrespectful and depressed.

“Sea of Truth” by Andrea de Carlo is pretty good.

All of Giuliano Mignini’s comments here might be worth translating and putting online.

It is quite clear that he is not simply offering his own opinion on the DNA. He is saying that they came across with the power of a smoking gun to the judges and the jury.

All of the very damning DNA evidence was handled competently and the Rome labs knew within hours that the bra clasp, which proved to have a LOT of Sollecito’s DNA on it, had not been collected.

And the defense teams KNEW the smoking-gun nature of the DNA evidence from very early on in the trial - in fact from when they first got the 10,000-plus evidence pages. Proofs of this?

(1) They delayed the re-visiting of the crime scene for 46 days so that they could say, look, the collection of the bar clasp took 46 days,

(2) They found “reasons” to skip the one-time processing of the DNA on the knife so they could clain the testing was not done properly, and

(3) Their DNA phase of the defense at trial was halting and awkward, with fumbling experts that showed no confidence, and with many days of delay.

They had no smoking gun of their own.

The defense and the adolescent groupies and their obviously incompetent expert “ex-FBI Agent Larry Johnson” are absolutely boxed in on this one. They will have zero impact on the appeal.

They start off with dozens of wrong “facts” and then try to come up with pet little theories on this and that “evidence” which remain light-years from being a full and convincing “RS and AK were railroaded” theory of the crime against Meredith.

Amanda, dont listen to the FOA frogs, who only grow louder as their swamp dries up around them. You should start talking and dealing. Bring some relief to Meredith’s family and her friends.

There is no other way to get yourself any breaks.
