The humorless and un-self-aware RS and AK really play into skeptical Italian commentators’ hands.
Almost everything Sollecito says and does now is put under the microscope. He seems to sort of get that he becomes the butt of a lot of often-subtle jokes. His ticked-off reactions only make things worse.
This is my translation of a second column by Selvaggia Lucarelli the popular TV and newsprint presence. This was our first.

Raffaele Sollecito becomes crime commentator on TV with TgCom24. Next stop ““ knife sharpener?

A year ago, the Court of Cassation definitively acquitted Raffaele Sollecito (and Amanda Knox). Evidentiary framework that would confirm their guilt beyond reasonable doubt was lacking. Now Raffaele Sollecito is a free man and has an inviolable right to do what he wants. He could be a singer, an insurance agent, a tailor, a blacksmith, a web designer, or a pizza maker.
And yet, all of his amazing attempts to kick off a second life are clues and evidence (which is rather damning) not to be guilty of murder “beyond reasonable doubt”, but to be guilty of bad taste, inelegance, missed opportunities and unintelligence beyond reasonable doubt. Beyond any doubt or hesitation at all. Beyond any uncertainty.
On this matter, the evidence is rather overwhelming and reliable. And no, I’m not part of that forcaioli (pitchfork, gallows) lobby Sollecito often likes to quote. I am part of that large group of people who witness his awkward and incoherent attempts at liberation / redemption and wonder if there is no one sensible next to him to suggest that he chooses a career a few fields away from the dead people / murder victims.
Because there would be other things to do if he wished so, yet the dear Raffaele, for now, of all the brilliant ideas about his future career has given birth to two: the first was that of an app (funded by the Puglia region with 66,000 Euro) to arrange funerals, share photos of the dead with others and, as is written in the introduction to his website, “to eliminate, through the services of the app, the distance between you and the person you want to commemorate.”
I mean, if really, thanks to Sollecito, there exists a way to keep in touch with the dead, we hope that Meredith’s mother downloads the app as soon as possible and chats with her daughter to ask who had murdered her, together with Rudi Guedè, seeing as he was convicted of murder in complicity with someone, but that someone has never been identified.
However, the Sollecito app, for which he won a grant (the Puglia region realized that the idea of funerals 2.0 was likely to slide into second place in the ranking of the top apps in the world after Whatsapp), must not have had the desired effect because Raffaele has decided to take a second road.
The news is just a few days old: Sollecito is now a TV crime expert in the Mediaset’s program “This Week’s Mystery” where he discusses amiably the most famous murder victims.
Of course, it should be recognized that in a world of improvised TV experts, it could not be said that the young man did not chew on his arguments, so all in all we appreciate his choice of Mediaset to work towards competence. It is the issue of good taste that continues to leave us vaguely incredulous, so much so that TgCom24 announced Sollecito’s debut on April 1, and virtually no one paid attention to the news believing that it was yet another surreal April Fools’ joke.
After three days and the airing of the program everyone had to believe the unbelievable and the news yesterday was revived by all. The moral of the story: Sollecito, commentator on TV in a broadcast on murder victims, in the history of all the April Fools’ jokes from the Cretaceous to the present, is not, alas, a false story mistaken for true, but the first real news mistaken for false.
I wonder now what will be his next steps in the world of work: maybe it would be a nice idea to open a guest house for students. Or become a sharpener of knives. Or open a real estate agency in Perugia. What is certain is that in the wake of this macabre narcissism anything is possible.
And yes, of course, that is the basic premise. The certainty that Raffaele Sollecito can do whatever the hell he wants. It is also true, however, a healthy person judged innocent by a court while half of Italy is still convinced he’s guilty would instead seek media oblivion.
And if not oblivion, at least a career a few fields away from the smell of death, the suspicion that death carries with it, the face of a little girl named Meredith who was killed like a dog. Not Raffaele, he does not intend to sever that bond (with the dead) but, on the contrary, seems to want to ride on with uncanny persistence.
Too bad. It took eight years to prove his innocence, it would take five minutes to prove his intelligence. Maybe opening a kiosk outside the stadium or an architectural bureau in Barletta, instead of going on TV to argue with Bruzzone who knows most about killings, would be a better idea. Meredith’s parents would appreciate this, I’m sure.

This just in from Miriam. Someone started a charge-org petition to keep Sollecito off TV. They are aiming for 25,000. Over 15,000 already signed. That was fast!

It’s heartening to note the incredulity and undisguised contempt that Sollecito seems to be held in by his fellow Italians.
The narcissism of both him and Knox in their continued attempts to stay in the limelight must be obvious, even to the most craven of their cult members.
I do think it’s at least partially fed by the fact that, like many narcissists, they know deep down just how talentless and valueless they actually are. I’m sure they realise that their only shot at making anything like a decent living (a living that they denied to poor Meredith who by all accounts had both talent and value in abundance) is to continue mining the seam of their notoriety.
That seam is fast running out in my opinion and will be shown in the end to have been nothing but iron pyrite anyway. Hopefully they will be trapped in the mine when they’ve finished digging.

Just a thought here, or maybe an observation. Given the well accepted Mafia connection. What was the payoff to the Sollecito family (Keep Guede muzzled by threats etc? don’t forget Guede was beaten up in jail). Given Sollecito’s sister, she must have had entre to files of known Mafia people, after all it’s not a secret.
So therefore what was the payoff. My guess is money laundering. Papa Sollecito is well known, established and has no criminal record. So why not given the state of the families’ finances one good turn deserving in another. This of course will come to light eventually.
It is my hope that Amanda Knox who is the real killer in this does not sleep well at all. I would like to see a picture of her now and confirm just what guilt will do to you. That would be difficult of course since being scared of her life she never goes out. Time will fix this.

Big subject and we still have a lot of information to gather.
The main payoff to the mafias through the action of their witting & unwitting fellow-travelers (we dont know of proof that actual “made men” had hands-on participation though there may be some) is presumed to be in taking Italian justice down a peg, so the bad guys get to have more wiggle room.
Since before any of us ever heard his name Dr Mignini has been a “licensed” mafia fighter, one of those specially trained and protected and willing to take risks. Preston’s ally Spezi is considered a fellow traveler, and he has lost a lot of court actions as a result and did spend time in prison. Hence apparently the idiot Preston screaming his lungs out about Mignini.
The Perugia and Florence prosecution offices have special status to handle crimes of central-government officials so that makes them targets. Florence is handling a big one now, to do with the funds for construction of a rail tunnel.
And both are or were targets when they got too close to the truth of the Monster of Florence killings. Stay tuned.

Miami City Ballet is here in NYC and one dance in particular which I saw last night - Bourree Fantasque - has the audiences gasping.
It starts mildly enough with 16 dancers. But then it adds and adds, until there are 42 on stage, in a complexity hard to describe or even remember.
No YouTube yet unfortunately and there’s no especially good description of what happens in the reviews.
Russian dancers often start out as gymnasts and move over in early teens. Here’s one dance where that sure paid off - dont try at home!

Knox does ballet? Really? That chunky gnome? Meredith sure did of course, and reportedly well.
Among US ballet companies the Nutcracker is regarded as something of a curse. In the US (but not in Europe) they all must do one at Christmas/New Year because its a real cashcow and millions of American moms drag along their kids. But also it makes many think all ballet is for kids so the Nutcracker is the only ballet they ever see.
If everyone’s first ballet was the Bouree Fantasque I praised that would probably double the US audience in a short time. It had not been reviewed when I saw it on saturday night and I doubt anyone knew what to expect.
But there is a rave review about it today by the US’s top ballet critic in the NY Times. This is the first part, which will be making the Miami dancers grin.
As Miami City Ballet — both heroic and sweet — went on dancing last week at the David H. Koch Theater, the extraordinary achievements of this company (founded 30 years ago) became newly clear. Of all the ballet troupes who have visited the Koch in recent years, none looks so truly and completely a company. None feels so effortlessly right for New York. None seems so satisfying a continuation of several trains of choreographic thought already known in this city. None gives us such warmth and energy.
Above all, the season firmly placed this troupe at the forefront of all those dancing choreography by George Balanchine today. The week’s performances of his “Serenade†(1934), “Bourrée Fantasque†(1949) and “Symphony in Three Movements†(1972) were superb. Balanchine used to ask his dancers “What are you saving it for?â€; these Miami dancers don’t need to be asked. The effortlessly spacious way they eat up space — fearlessly, again and again, stepping over the brink as if into the unknown — is a thrill to the senses. So is their sparkling musicality, catching multiple facets of the music and, like mirrors, beaming them out into the auditorium.
The exhilarating production of “Bourrée Fantasque,†staged by Susan Pilarre, is a special triumph. Despite being choreographed here for New York City Ballet and despite brief-lived stagings by that company, American Ballet Theater and School of American Ballet in the last 35 years, this has become one of the Balanchine classics least known in this city. Set to three dance-filled scores by Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-94), it moves from comic absurdity, via coolly ceremonious romance, to dazzling ebullience. There’s a dash of crazy intoxication to the whole ballet that’s entirely insidious.
Even if you think you know how exciting a Balanchine massed-ranks finale can be, the one that ends “Bourrée†proves yet more intense than others, with astounding shifts of geometric formations. There’s one ultra-ebullient sequence where no fewer than four concentric rings of dancers are all moving to, fro, in and out and around, while a ballerina at the center (the fabulously fearless Nathalia Arja) is bursting into the air in lifts like a champagne cork. A moment later, they’re all arrayed in vertical lines, moving with no less energy.
The artistic director would have known about this lost work, because she danced in NY City Ballet for many years with the creator Balanchine.
My friend reported from a holiday in Russia, their custom is to get butch men to dress up in tutus and tights and perform the Sugar Plum bit. It’s supposedly very hilarious.

Little of that in the US! Spectacle is all here. But Russians like farce in some of their ballets. Their Nutcrackers really are beamed at 6-year-olds, with bees and so on. In Russian that doesnt matter because theres so much serious ballet also and its an okay occupation for any man to get into, especially if they arrive as gymnasts.
They way to arrive at ballet for the first time and want to see more and more (as I did a few years ago) is to first see a huge company with a large orchestra and great costumes and sets. A spectacle ballet is really jolting, especially with 40-60 dancers on stage (Bourree Fantasque requires 42).
Ballet’s problem is only a dozen or so cities in the world can support companies of that size although Moscow and New York have two main companies and St Petersburg several. Ballet is big in Latin America and Miami has a lot of residents from that region, especially Cuba where ballet is almost a cult.

Just in case there is any misrepresentation here just let me reiterate that I wish nothing for Knox and Sollecito other than bad things happening to them for the rest of their miserable lives no matter how long or short. For example there is a strong indication that serial killer Karla Hamolka has moved back the Quebec. She will not be there for long because a ‘hew and cry’ will go forth and she will will be ousted from society once more. As for Knox it is my sincere wish that if she fell off a very high building then Superman would swoop her up and carry her to an even greater height and then drop her screaming to the ground.
