Looks Like Seattle Post Intelligencer Could Be On The Rocks

Posted by Peter Quennell

Click above for the breaking story.

The Seattle PI offered the best Meredith-case reporting, Andrea Vogt’s, from Rome. And the worst Meredith-case blogging, Candace Dempsey’s, from Seattle.

Weird editorial judgment. To say the least. More of the former and an absence of the latter could have really boosted this newspaper’s prospects.

Here are our past takes on the paper’s general decline and one bright spot.

Oh dear, who will host Candace Dempsey’s Amanda Knox Defense Blog?  It looks like this could occur right in the middle of the trial.

On a positive note, all the banned people the Italian Woman snuffed out across the entire PI site, won’t have to watch others comment anymore while not being allowed to voice their opinions.

I will miss Andrea Vogt’s excellent reporting on this case however.

Oh dear indeed. She has apparently announced she will be headed for Perugia again, but will be doing little trial blogging as she has other interests to take care of.

Presumably the book struggles on, even as all sources dry up. We have more exciting posts coming up on the subject of that book.

And some questions about a stalker photographed behind the Kerchers in Perugia. And hopefully a story about Mignini frogmarching an itinerant right out of Italy.

I thought something was going on. The Dempsey blog has been closed and not a peep from her, way past the holiday period and this was most unusual. Could it be the PI editorial have decided her blog may make the milk sour for any potential buyer and therefore turned off the lights on her propaganda machine? Certainly, the blog is ‘toxic’. the media equivilent of toxic debt for the banking industry. If so, oh dear…where will she find a new host that has given her such strong support and afforded her to enjoy so much traffic as the PI brand?

The Kercher’s or MK’s friends wouldn’t grant an interview to Dempsey if she was the last “journalist” on earth so her book will be very one dimensional.

Seattle PI lost the game when they showed their hand and started to support Knox and started ignoring the fact that there was this person called Meredith involved somewhere.  The nasty comments on the Dempsey blog and the poor reporting by Monica Guzman must have put the boot in too.  This story should have been HUGE for them and sold lots of papers, instead it’s probably their undoing.

Daisy, it’s good to hear that the news of the infamous book deal reached all ears!

Thanks for keeping us updated on the possible fate of Seattle’s “other” newspaper, Pete. The two papers have been under a joint operating agreement for some time, which is another way of saying that at least one of them has been on life support. Guess which one?
People like Anne Bremner, who are fighting to ensure that Seattle maintains its status as a “two paper town” might do better to focus on ensuring that Seattle has at least one daily newspaper of quality.

Poor Anne and Candy.  Perhaps they might concentrate on saving that sweet Casey Anthony instead?
