Madeleine McCann: German Prosecution To Search Portuguese Reservoir On Tuesday

Posted by Peter Quennell

Update

Our fifth post on the missing Madeleine. Of special interest here for this reason.

The Machine did our two most recent posts on the Germain suspect Brueckner, from which the search of the Barragem do Arade reservoir near where he lived, 30 miles/50 kilometers from the McCann’s hotel, fairly directly flows.

Why the reservoir? We don’t see a reported reason yet. For more on Brueckner and his long rampage in Portugal, here is a good further update. He is known to have been close to where Madeleine was on the night.

The Portuguese cops are assisting, though they have been at times doubtful. Presumably news will spread fast if the cops find anything and we’ll post that.

Glad to be back with some achievements, everybody! Not through any special planning, I’ve spend a dozen pretty happy years on the edge of the Sahara and know a lot of things and a lot of people that suddenly became useful.

Many places around the Sahara can see turbulence because the artificial frontiers make for some strange bed-fellows. Nigeria (where I was based for a while) is a strange mixture of Arab Africa and Black Africa; the Sudan (I was based there too) also.

The desert can be very addictive, especially under the moonlight. Nobody is quite sure of its entire history. For example how did early humanity makes its way across to fan out to all of the other points in the world?

Khartoum and Kuwait are the world’s two hotest cities, and for much of the year many or most of the populations sleep outside, generally on the flat rooftops. Not much of that in New York of course.

Today the US Navy is really showing its strength in New York with a Parade of Ships up the Hudson (other arms of the defense forces are more frequently obvious). The city will be full of sailors in white for the next week

First to go by was the USS Cole, famous for being attacked while refueling in Aden just over 20 years ago. The attack was organized from Khartoum where Bin Laden was living at the time. The Sudan government agreed to pay hundreds of millions in reparations after a diplomatic and legal fight.

A very modern Italian ship, the frigate Virgubia Faso just sailed by. Naval jets and helicopters have been up and down. This is the full list.

This year’s parade of ships will include vessels from the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), the Italian Navy, the Royal Canadian Navy, and the Royal Navy. Ships to participate:

- USS Wasp (LHD 1), an amphibious assault ship from Norfolk, Virginia

- USS Oak Hill (LSD 51), a dock landing ship from Norfolk, Virginia

- HMS Scott (H131), an ocean survey vessel from Plymouth, United Kingdom

- ITS Virginio Fasan (F 591), a frigate from La Spezia, Italy

- HMCS Glace Bay (MM 701), a maritime coastal defense vessel from Nova Scotia, Canada

- USCGC Warren Deyampert (WPC 1151), a fast response cutter from Boston, Massachusetts

- Four U.S. Naval Academy yard patrol crafts (YPs) from Annapolis, Maryland

- USNS Newport (T-EPF 12), an expeditionary fast transport from Norfolk, Virginia

- USS Cole (DDG 67), a guided missile destroyer from Norfolk, Virginia

- DCV Gelberman, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) drift collection vessel from New York

- Fireboat 343, a New York City Fire Department Ranger 4200 class fireboat from New York

- Tall Ship Clipper City, a gaff-rigged schooner ship operated by Manhattan By Sail from New York

If you want to see the ships, you can find them along the Hudson River from Battery Park to just south of the George Washington Bridge.

There will even be an 11-gun salute, called Salute to the Ships of Fleet Week, to the flagship, USS Wasp, as the ship passes by Fort Hamilton.
