Why CBS Should Report Better - Way Better - On This Case

Posted by Peter Quennell

Pizzey makes at least two mistakes in this gushy little report from Rome on CBS News

  • The short-form trial can normally result in a 1/3 reduction in the sentence - the 2/3 claim appears to be baseless.
  • Rudy Guede “admits” to having sex with the victim - better make that “claims” to have had sex, widely disbelieved.

CBS continues its abysmal track record of being one of the most factually-challenged sources on the case.

At least Pizzy notes that Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito have given conflicting accounts of the night in question. That is a step in the direction of accuracy. But why does he mention the Kercher family’s civil suit and neglect to mention Patrick Lumumba’s? Then he could have also noted that, not only were their accounts conflicting, they also gave several different ones.

Isn’t there another civil suit from the landlord of the cottage?

The landlord has not been getting any rent for nearly a year now and doubt very much that situation would change.

That would be 3 civil suits in total.

Kermit and Pete,

A couple things about the site; I’m guessing English is not your native language, which makes it difficult to understand what you are trying to say in several places on the site.

More importantly, the “mistakes” that you point out made in the CBS report are incredibly weak.  The first -  “The short-form trial can normally result in a 1/3 reduction in the sentence - the 2/3 claim appears to be baseless.”  Please point out your source for this info, just saying something is “baseless” does not prove your point.

2nd - “Rudy Guede “admits” to having sex with the victim - better make that “claims” to have had sex, widely disbelieved.”  It is very common for the US news media to say the suspect “admitted” to an aspect of the crime since using the word “claimed” would make it sound like a sexual conquest and not an aspect of the criminal case.

A pretty weak shot CBS.

Our site is widely praised for clear English which IS if it matters our native language.

CBS reports are riddled with errors like the sentence deduction we pointed to. CBS arithmetic suggests the sentence would be HALF what it actually would be.

And “admitted to having sex” is a HUGE smear on Meredith Kercher. It is NOT very common for US media to smear victims like this. Women in particular here are hyper-sensitive to such sexist reporting. It pretty well never happens.

You can do better.
