exactly as i thought - within hours of the verdict, all the major cable channels covered the verdict AND Dateline did an hour special on the case.  Thank goodness for Dateline!  finally, objective reporting.  Thank goodness for Barbie who did a great job of explaining the evidence OBJECTIVELY.  no spin.  i was quite frustrated with CNN’s coverage and with Wolf Blitzer’s guest, the woman from Vanity Fair.  she was quite arrogant.  like barbie said we may never really know what happened that night; but maybe more incriminating evidence will come out in the appeals trial.  thank you peter for your devotion to meredith’s cause and your persistent attempt to search for the truth. 

yes there were smiles on the faces of meredith’s family; but their eyes will forever reflect the sadness of losing her.

Its a strange move for a US-senator: Without any reflection, and probably very little knowledge on the case and circumstances, Cantwell is able to clearly identify that the only rationale for a conviction of Amanda must be the ‘flawed’ Italian system of justice.

Cantwell explicitly criticises the Italian system of justice for not being like the US-system, as if the US-system of justice is a benchmarking standard for the world. She mentions the non- sequestration of the jury, as if is a God-given rule that justice can only come about with sequestered jurors. And she mentions the handling of evidence, the case against Mignini, and the harsh treatment of Amanda, as if these were facts and not defence arguments in a case. How utterly incompetent of a US-senator to flash such an ethnocentric position – and to single out this case as a cause for huge political intervention is abuse of power/manipulation.

Reading through a lot of Seattle blogs during this night and today, I’m happy to experience that a large amount – maybe even the majority - of the comments posted accepts the conviction of Amanda and Rafaelle, and are critical towards the US-media and senator Cantwell.

A note from another world: Two Norwegians has just received dead-penalties in Congo for a.o. murder. Norwegian secretary of State Jonas Gahr Støre don’t label the Congolese system of justice ‘flawed’ or ‘racist’. He respects the sentences, but made a phone call to the Congolese secretary of state to express that Norway strongly opposes death penalty, and that they hope that this would be taken into consideration.

Gramjan I am so sorry I missed Dateline. Maybe I will have the opportunity to view this segment online. I was so disgusted with the coverage that I had to turn off the tv. What a beautiful family. This whole case was a tragedy for both families. I only hope that Amanda’s family will confront the evidence and get her the help she needs. As for Raf,  I am hopeful he will “roll” during his appeal.

Meredith Kercher was a lovely young woman and I would love to know more about here. And her parents and family have endured something unimaginable.

I am afraid what they’ve endured the last two years will continue.

This has been overshadowed by Amanda Knox and Raffaelle Sollecito. But now it is even bigger than that and I am afraid that Meredith will continue to be overshadowed. This is a horrible result. This is not TrueJustice. True Justice is not doubtful. No matter how much you believe this is the right result, opinions are way too split on this, and there has to be a reason why: at the very least there was a poor job at assembling a case against these two, or the stubborn truth that they are truly innocent.

If only Meredith could testify.

Dear Senator Cantwell

I have just read your missive regarding the verdict handed down to Amanda Knox in the Meredith Kercher trial.

I wish to object in the strongest possible terms to your insensitivity at the timing of your irrational protestations and the xenophobic tone of your arguments with regard to the Italian justice system.

As a UK citizen I have bothered to read ‘more than one book’ on this subject and would tactfully suggest that you do the same.

I feel almost inclined to ask who the hell do Americans like you think you are?

It is most clear that the majority of the press sensationalism - that you so eagerly criticise - has eminated from your side of the Atlantic, particularly from the Friends of Amanda Knox organisation which, more than anything, has clouded the real facts concerning this case.

I nor you know for certain whether Amanda Knox is innocent or guilty but I am satisfied that the Italian court system has reached a fair and just verdict not helped by the outrageous catawalling from a biased American media and a country who’s claims to have a superior legal system compared to other countries is simply not true and quite frankly laughable.

I trust that Hillary Clinton will tell you the same.

What a dignified and graceful family.  Even though they said it brings some justice for Meredith, it is not a cause for celebration.  They never have a negative word to say - truly what an example.

So nice to see the family smiling.  Stephanie looks so much like Meredith, especially with her long hair now.  I wonder if Amanda and Rafaelle had to to a double take!?

The Kerchers are being generous even in their great sorrow, insisting that this is no time for celebration.

I read this night that Amanda’s aunt in Seattle was insinuating - again - a wrong trial due to a dominant and terrifying Mignini who likes to put people in jail “for nothing” so the jury was influenced by fear… I understand they are upset, but how can they keep saying there were no proof whatsoever? The aunt was even insinuating that the day before Meredith’s death, they were texting each other. Forgot to tell Meredith never picked up the phone!

Shamefully, Senator Maria Cantwell from Washington,my state, immediately joined the Knox Seattle PR mafia and Seattle media marionettes in continuing their slur against Italians,their institutions and officials. It’s as if Anne Bremner and Marriott literally own the news crews at KOMO,KING KIRO. Cantwell said she would pressure Hillary and the State Dept to change the outcome. Truly sickening behavior by a pandering Senator whom I’ve supported for years.

I am a Hungarian living in Seattle for almost 4 years. And I am very sad to see that you can buy here just about everything with money. If you have money you can buy justice, you can buy the media coverage and your politicians also. I like living in the US for many reasons, but this one is not one of them. And I am afraid if Amanda gets back here with the help from her “supporters” there is going to be one more killer in this town. We already had one who killed the 4 policemen last week, we will get another one soon. Please, don’t do this to this city, we already had enough…

croydonive, I am also very grateful to you for your willingness to hold such a very clear and shining mirror up to Cantwell, showing the senator her own very disgraceful behavior.

I am an American, living in Chicago. It does not surprise, but continues to astound me that, at this point in our history, most people in the U.S. continue to think we have a God-given right to judge other countries, especially countries in the EU. In Chicago, we recently had a major comeuppance, when the city was eliminated in the first round during the IOC vote for the 2016 Olympic Games.

Slowly but surely, people will have to wake up to the fact that we lost our place on the pedestal, and with it, our ability to stomp around the world with that proverbial big stick, a long time ago.

Knox will not be able to return to the US-if her sentence is confirmed-unless she applies for a transfer to a US penal institution which could be granted after she has served a number of years here, and upon guarantee by the US governemnt that she’ll fully serve the sentence in a US jail.This is part of an international treaty for the exchange of convicted felons that Italy and (I believe) the US have signed.(Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons

But given the ample opportunities for redemption offered to felons by the Italian system, I think it’s better for her to stick around here, as she may be able to obtain a semi-liberty regimen after perhaps 11 or 12 years or even less. I doubt the same would happen in the US. Obtaining substantial discounts off a sentence is not very hard in Italy, provided that the felon REPENTS. Of course, in order to repent, one must first confess the crime. So if Knox and Sollecito’s prison terms are confirmed by next Courts of Appeal, we may finally know the truth about that fateful night of Nov 1st, 2007.Unfortunately, it may take another two or three years…
