A good report now online from Newsweek’s Italy correspondent Barbie Nadeau.

Newsweek’s piece has more detail on the testimony from Meredith’s sad friends than previously reported in English. It concludes that the case continues to be stranger than fiction.

By the way, Newsweek is the only US weekly devoting resources to the case so far - strange to us, as the growth in our own readership suggests a very big potential audience.

Those windows behind the judge and jury appear frosted. A pity if one wants to daydream, as surely some do… For the record, those windows face east, toward the sunrise. Late in the day the court would be dark.

The view in that direction is mostly pretty farming country and some low hills in the distance. The city did not really spread out in that direction, maybe because the massif is steepest on that side. The autostrada from Rome to Venice crosses from near right to far left about a kilometer away.

It’s been said that Alcatraz prison in San Francisco harbor was the hardest of all to take, because the views were terrific and the sounds and smells of San Francisco wafted across, especially at night.
