Italy: The Only Country To Host THREE of the UN’s 12 Global Anti-Crime Nodes

1. How Italy Cooperates With The US Etc Etc in Crime Fighting

We have long observed that Italy cooperates in numerous ways with other nations, especially the US.

The US’s FBI has a well-staffed office in Rome working with its Italian counterparts on espionage and terrrorism among other common interests and hosts the Carabinieri in the US.

These 15 posts go to show why Italy is universally regarded in official circles as an excellent anti-crime partner to work with.

2. How Italy Is Perhaps THE Global Leader In Knowledge-Spreading

There’s been much vague and ill-informed commentary on Italy’s crime fighting, as if it is somehow way back there (“not observing international standards” and “complaints to the ECHR are epic”) and somehow pales in comparison to the US in this.

It is somewhat the reverse in reality.

We have posted series on the Italian and American systems showing that Italy very much has the edge these days. Italian reforms are in the wind but they relate to speeding up the system (with a diminishment of perps’ rights) and not to more justice, or fairer justice, which are hardly lacking.

And globally Italy matters MORE than the US to the enhancing of justice worldwide. This post describes how the gobal justice bodies are organized. A UN division in New York and 12 global development nodes around the world.

This is a description of it all posted by the one American node, the Bureau of Justice Statistics, which is an arm of the Federal Department of Justice (as is the Federal Bureau of Investigation).

The United Nations (UN) is the principal source of comparative crime and justice statistics. The UN Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention (ODCCP) promotes research and collaboration, studies new and emerging forms of crime, and produces documents to assist in the global fight against crime and drug abuse.

Within the ODCCP, the Centre for International Crime Prevention (CICP) maintains the Internet-based United Nations Crime and Justice Information Network (UNCJIN), which includes crime statistics and publications. This site provides an extensive list of links to the United Nations agencies and other research organizations and universities.

The Center also supports the work of intergovernmental bodies which set out an international strategy and measures to prevent crime and promote stable criminal justice systems. United Nations documents relating to these intergovernmental commissions and congresses are available online.

Italy hosts and financially supports fully a quarter of all the 12 global UN nodes, with Canada’s two nodes second. Seven other countries host one node each. .

3. In Conclusion

If you want to know something about “global standards” and the state of the art in nations around the world in crimefighting, where would you probably want to look first?

To professionals, it is obvious. To Italy.

The status of crime-fighting DNA analysis in Italy has been particularly misrepresented, especially by Hampikian and Gill.

As in other crime fields Italy is a global leader in this and very close partner of the FBI.

All the DNA processing in the case was done with defense witnesses looking on (oh, Hampikian and Gill “forgot” to mention that?!)

Our latest Meredith-case DNA overviews by James Raper and KrissyG are highly worth a read.

Another tip. As evidence processing in our case was deliberately put under a cloud AFTER trial - at trial the defenses barely landed a blow - start here, and then go read the experts’ testimony at trial on the Wiki, which is largely in English now.

You cant really say that common-law countries have their systems just right when an estimated 200,000-plus innocents are sitting in American prisons due to the extreme lurch of power in the system from the judges to the prosecutors.

No way Italian prosecutors like Dr Mignini have anywhere near as many powers as their American counterparts. Italian judges (all of whom are career-path, none of whom are politically-appointed or elected bunglers like Heavey) still do rule the roost there.

So the equivalent of 200,000 innocents sitting in Italian prisons is quite impossible.

Barry Scheck of the Innocence Project knows about this vast number of imprisoned innocents for sure - it clearly embarrasses him to have to talk about it and he has no answer in his interviews on YouTube. After all, as KrissyG has pointed out, easy big bucks is what drives his innocence Project. Not innocence.

Italian interest in getting it right in terms of truth, fairness and humaneness did not just emerge post-WWII when the constitutional law was rewritten.

It goes back hundreds of years, during which post-Renaissance Italy was distancing itself from countries further to the north and also the west, with their witch-hunting (remember Salem with 20 witches executed?) and public executions and hanging-and-quartering (don’t ask!) and arbitrary sending of perps to Australia and Latin America.

Read of this amazingly enlightened work done 250 years ago - everybody in those three global nodes will know about him, he is their true founder.

We have fine posts by Chimera and James Raper comparing the two systems in considerable depth, which will get their own overviews once the media requests for points of entry into the case have been met.

We have encountered two, more superficial, comparisons from within American law schools - a good one from the McGeorge school in Sacramento, California, and this truly terrible one from the Emory School in Atlanta, Georgia.

Hello again. TJMK etc were down for some hours because a security patch applied overnight switched something off in a bank of servers. Tech support is running a script for each server to correct. Hopefully last time we go dark for many moons.

Disgruntlement here in the US is a bit more-so right now because there is no US team in the World Cup (it lost out in the qualies to Trinidad).

I’d expect UK investor Joe Lewis to be in Russia as he has seven of his UK club players there, but as these shots show, he isnt (or anyway his boat isnt).

1 Last night.

2 Two minutes ago.

The boat rotates on the tide, he is not really pointing his guns chez moi (is he?).
