Van der Sloot Scheme Detailed

Suspect demanded signed contract in Natalee Holloway extortion plot

JUNE 10—As he plotted to extort money from the mother of Natalee Holloway, suspected murderer Joran van der Sloot insisted that a written contract be signed by both parties, according to an FBI affidavit unsealed today. The document, sworn by Agent William Bryan, details van der Sloot’s bid to shake down $250,000 from Beth Holloway Twitty, mother of the late Alabama teenager. Van der Sloot, 22, is the prime suspect in the May 2005 disappearance of Holloway, who went missing in Aruba during a high school graduation trip. According to Bryan’s affidavit, van der Sloot offered to disclose the whereabouts of Holloway’s body in return for the six-figure payout. During a May 10 meeting at an Aruba hotel, van der Sloot and a Twitty representative “signed two copies of the agreement and took pictures of each other signing the agreement.” Investigators contend that the legal formalities were part of an elaborate ruse by van der Sloot, who later guided Twitty’s representative to a home where he claimed Holloway had been buried in the foundation. Aruban building records, however, later revealed that the residence was not even under construction at the time of Holloway’s disappearance. In a May 17 e-mail to Twitty’s representative, “van der Sloot admitted…that he had lied about the location” of the teen’s corpse. By then, the Dutch man had extracted $25,000 from Twitty, which resulted last week in him being named in a two-count extortion complaint. The federal rap is the lesser of counts on the criminal docket of van der Sloot, who is expected to be charged with the May 30 murder of Stephany Flores, 21, who was found dead in a Peru hotel room registered to van der Sloot. I still feel something is not right: why would he “reveal” where the remains are - knowing there is nothing to be found - while he only got $25K and not the $250K???? Why take $10K, then $15K? It is very strange ...

Am I missing something?  Isn’t van der Sloot’s offer to show where he hid the body (regardless that the body was not actually buried there)about tantamount to a confession?  Plus they have the film of him telling someone else about killing her…..Why is this guy not being charged for Natalee Holloway’s murder????

@Mo-in-Mass
The existing video shows Joran van der Sloot admitting of having disposed of her body, but not killing her. According to his story recorded by an undercover journalist, Natalee “collapsed”.

Needless to say that I agree with you and I think he should be tried nonetheless, but unfortunately in most countries if there is no body =  no crime. The person who actually transported Natalee Holloway’s body in a boat and disposed her in the ocean is suspected to have been Joran van der Sloot’s father.

In my opinion he is lying in the video once again. Why would anybody dispose of a body, if she “just collapsed”? Me thinks she might have really collapsed, but because of an overdose of his date raping pills, that might have triggered him to hide her body, sure. Or, more likely considering what happened to Stephany Flores in Perú: he simply killed her like he did with Stephany Flores.

In Perú they don’t seem to buy into his rage story and I hope they give him the maximum sentence of 35 years. After that he should be handed over to the USA and spent the rest of his years in prison.

my guess is the 10k was something like “good faith” money. there is some law about travelling with more thank 10K in actual American cash (no doubt about drug money and money laundering). Kelly was travelling as a private citizen so he could make the claim, but I think the deal was to hit van der Sloot with both extortion but the much more serious charge of wire fraud. I don’t know the ins and outs of this stuff, but I do know that wire fraud is taken very seriously and has something like a 30 year sentence. The filed in Alabama (horrible prisons there). Aruba will apparently extradite for financial crime—so they were trying to back him into some sort of corner where he’d reveal Natalee’s whereabouts—perhaps with only a charge of manslaughter in exchange for dropping the US charges….I don’t know, I am guessing but since the money was most probably Beth’s, my suspicion is they were taking one last stab at trying to find out where Natalee was and what really happened.

@Patou,

The money extortion is indeed a very strange case. I doubt Joran would initiate this kind of extortion, since indeed, it would incriminate himself.

I am convinced a private detective is on him all the time and when they realized Joran was in a constant need for money,  he was approached and manipulated into this extortion plot.

I don´t believe Joran is capable of manipulating the Twitty legal counsel and the FBI and getting away with it. I believe he was cornered when he was broke and he wanted the money so badly, that he signed the document.

After that, he tried to get away from Aruba, because obviously it is not in his interest that the remains are found, if he even knows where they are.

Maybe Stephany Flores was approached by an FBI agent to go through Joran´s stuff when they found out he got along with her. What young woman would want to go through the laptop of a guy she has just met the night before? Didn´t Joran have a password protected account on his laptop?

If police investigation of the laptop confirms that she looked at the content he is claiming and his laptop is password protected, and Joran did not leave his account open before he went for breakfast, she really must have upset him by gaining access to his files.

Who wouldn´t be paranoid if millions of people see you as the murderer of Natalee Holloway, being a persona non grata in Aruba, being followed by private agents, being in a shady deal with the FBI and being broke in a foreign country?

I don´t think very highly of Joran, but a 17 year old is not capable of obstructing a police investigation. That was his father. No wonder the guy died of a heart attack at 57. Joran feels extremely guilty. He has been protecting his father for five years now. He could never tell the truth, because his father helped him get rid of evidence and obstructed the investigation.

His father has just past away and it is no coincidence that FBI and Twitty legal counsel were trying to get some truth out of him while he was at his most vulnerable in five years. The only person he could probably confide in, was his father. For that reason I also fin it extremely telling that Stephany was killed with a tennis racket. Most likely the same racket Joran´s father was using when he past away.

@Saskia

Thanks! I believe you are right, everything is fishy in this story. I hope they did not use poor Stephany in this… But you are right, he certainly did not leave this kind of info without a password for her to see….

I also wonder: if it is true, she is said to have been found in her panties. But he said she wanted to leave and he got mad. She wanted to leave in her panties?????
